A visit to a Thailand and the tropical island of Koh Phangan (sometimes spelled Ko Pha Ngan) means a holiday amongst some of the best beaches in the country as well as some of the biggest beach parties on offer. With so much to enjoy Koh Phangan hotels provide a comfy base from which to explore and experience the local area.
Whilst peace and quiet and spaces for relaxation can be found on many of the beaches on this island, Koh Phangan also offers a more party based atmosphere and environment. Being a large island both environments exist in perfect harmony and make for an exciting and interesting holiday destination.
Koh Phangan was once known as a hideaway for backpackers looking to explore Asia and its unique culture. Although it is still a popular destination for the backpacking traveler some beaches are still "empty" in the low season. The Northeastern beaches for example provide quiet spots for reading and relaxation.
The party scene however is located on the Southern beaches and is brought to life with the Full Moon Party, famed for its high attendance of between 10,000-30,000, its dance floor made of sand and its varied range of music. From trance and techno to drum and bass and pop this party is certainly not dull!
Away from the parties sand and sea, the island also contains a number of historical sites that reflect the varied culture and spiritual side to the island.
The Chinese temple in the northwestern area of Koh Phangan was built in the early nineties and was based on the dream of a women called Khun Malawan. Here you'll find a contemporary take on local religion and spirituality.
Dating back to 1400 the temple of Wat Phu Khao Noi (meaning "The temple of the small mountain") gives a much more historical account of the local area. This temple is the oldest on the island and was named a spiritual site by Buddhist monks. Still used by monks today this temple can be experienced by visitors. However bear in mind that when visiting appropriate clothing must be worn and that swimwear is not suitable.
Other areas of interest on the island include the Than Sadet Waterfall situated on the east coast and within the National Park. Also known as Than Sadej or "Royal Stream" the waterfall contains rock pools and streams and famous inscriptions on nearby boulders made by visiting Kings.
The nearby landscape provides further interesting sights with its towering mountains, the tallest of which being Khao Ra. Although it is possible to journey to the top of this mountain it reaches high above sea level and can be a challenging climb. The views from the top however are well worth it!
At a lower level, beaches such as Haad Yao, Haad Chao Phao and Haad Salad offer exquisite views over the sea and of the tranquil sunsets set the scene for an exciting late night snorkel or romantic dinner.
Koh Phangan hotels offer the chance to enjoy all of the above and more, with a range of options for the luxury or budget holiday depending on individual needs. From modern to traditional Thai-style rooms holiday makers can choose from a large selection of options.
